The Goodwood Handicap, now known simply as the Goodwood, is one of the top-class Group 1 feature races held at the esteemed Morphettville racecourse as part of Adelaide’s annual racing carnival.
The Group 1 Goodwood takes place in late April or early May each year and is one of two Group 1 feature races held on the day, the other being the SA Derby.
Worth a lucrative $300,000 in prizemoney, the Goodwood is a tense 1200m sprint now run under set weight plus penalty conditions.
The Goodwood is one of two premier Group 1 sprint races held in Adelaide, but is the only one open to both sexes as the Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) is a fillies and mares only event.
As such, the Goodwood always draws an excellent field of fine sprinters keen to secure a coveted Group 1 victory.
Lead Up Races
Fillies and mares that contest the Robert Sangster Stakes often back up with a run in the Goodwood so keep an eye on this earlier Group 1 feature as a guide for the Goodwood.
Another quality preparatory race is the Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m) held a fortnight earlier at the same track.
History
A long established South Australian race first run in 1881, the Goodwood was first won by D.O.D. when the event was a Principal race.
In 1980 the Goodwood was elevated to a Group 1 race.
Up until 2007 the Goodwood was run under handicap conditions and was known as the Goodwood Handicap. When the SAJC (South Australian Jockey Club) changed the race to a set weight plus penalties race, it was also renamed as just the Goodwood.
