2014 The Goodwood Nominations Released

May 2nd, 2014

A talented field of 31 runners have been nominated for an appearance in the major Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at South Australia’s Morphettville Racecourse on May 10th, highlighted by several previous winners at the highest level of Australian racing.

Leading from start to finish to claim the Group 1 Robert Sangster Classic (1200m) last time out, Driefontein has been included in nominations for the 2014 The Goodwood.

Securing a total of eight victories and five places from 24 competitive starts to date, Driefontein has undoubtedly returned to racing in career best form this time in; winning the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) first-up and working towards prime condition over her three most recent starts.

Overcoming poor position to finish fifth in the particularly well contested Millie Fox Stakes (1300m), the Fastnet Rock mare strolled home to win the Group 3 Irwin Stakes (1100m) only two weeks prior to her latest triumph.

Likely to return to the spelling paddock following The Goodwood, trainer Gai Waterhouse is confident Driefontein will end her season in perfect fashion.

Also included in nominations for the 2014 The Goodwood is 2013 The Galaxy (1100m) champion Bel Sprinter.

A standout performer over the 2013 racing calendar, Bel Sprinter followed up his impressive first-up victory in The Galaxy with a hard-fought third behind equine superstar Black Caviar in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) before travelling abroad to finish an unlucky second behind Lucky Nine in the Group 1 Krisflyer International Sprint (1200m) in Singapore.

While yet to figure in any of his four race starts in 2013, trainer Jason Warren is confident the firm tracks of South Australia will play into the strengths of the Bel Esprit gelding and is confident of Goodwood success this year.

An impressive performer over the 2013 spring, trainer Wez Hunter is hopeful of a return to peak condition and maiden Group 1 title for Smokin’ Joey in the 2014 The Goodwood.

Strolling home to win the Group 3 TAB.com.au Stakes (1400m) on November second, Smokin’ Joey nearly caused one of the season’s biggest upsets just one week later; producing an incredible turn of foot to run from the rear of the field and find the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) line just a short nose behind Boban.

Unable to figure over any of his four race starts so far this preparation, the Encosta De Lago gelding has reportedly taken to work positively since running sixth in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) last time out, and will be a definite chance of success in The Goodwood if allocated a favourable barrier.

One of the standout performers of Australian racing throughout his current preparation, Sistine Demon is in line to secure a maiden Group 1 title in the 2014 The Goodwood on May 10th.

Securing an impressive total of eight wins and four places from just 16 appearances so far, the Excites gelding is unlucky not to be on a run of eight consecutive victories; having finished second by a nose in the Listed Kilmore Cup (1600m) on February 23rd, before returning to the winner’s circle with back-to-back victories in the Listed Super Saturday Stakes (1400m) and Victoria Handicap most recently.

Stable star of trainer Andrew Noblet, Sistine Demon has more than earned his position in the field for a maiden Group 1 tilt and with be particularly difficult to beat from any position.
