Warren Hopeful Of Success for Bel Sprinter in 2014 The Goodwood

May 7th, 2014

Despite having drawn what many would consider the ideal barrier 1 for this weekend’s featured Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville Racecourse, trainer Jason Warren is not so pleased with former Group 1 champion Bel Sprinter’s allocation.

A noted performer over the 2013 racing calendar, Bel Sprinter has seemingly struggled in leaving from the barriers in four competitive appearances so far this preparation, forcing Warren and team into lengthy measures in an attempt to overcome issue.

Confirmed to use a blindfold in the loading process for the second time this weekend, Warren told Racing Ahead the issue is seemingly limited to competitive events only.

“He has a bit of weight and he needs to leave the barriers well from barrier one, which looks to be the worst barrier he could have drawn” Warren said.

“He will wear a blindfold in the barriers and we will put that off just before the barriers open.

“It just sort of helps trick him into thinking that he has just done in; he is not a horse that is scared of being in the barriers and he always jumps well at the jump outs because he is not in there long.

“We are trying to replicate that.

“He is a very frustrating horse and if he can jump well and posie him he will be in the finish.”

Yet to claim a further race win since strolling home to secure the 2013 Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) title, Warren said he has still be largely pleased with the condition and performances of the Bel Esprit gelding.

“I think that the horse is still going quiet well” Warren said.

“The hard thing is that the T.J. Smith was absolutely no guide on the horse, Craig Newitt told me that he thought it was one of the heaviest tracks he has ridden on in Australia, and our horse didn’t get through it at all.

“It was quiet a wet track at Rosehill in The Galaxy, but nowhere near as bad and he just got through that.”

Finishing a disappointing 14th in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) on a rain soaked Randwick track last time out, Bel Sprinter is currently given little chance of success in betting markets for the 2014 The Goodwood; offered at particularly generous odds of $16.

Breaking through for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Classic (1200m) last time out, Driefontein is currently tied with in-form gelding Sistine Demon has clear favourite in betting markets to secure the 2014 The Goodwood crown at even $7 odds.
