Smokin’ Joey Confirmed for 2015 The Goodwood Title Defence

April 7th, 2015

Talented veteran Smokin’ Joey charged home to post a maiden Group 1 victory at long odds in the 2014 edition of The Goodwood (1200m) and has been confirmed by trainer Wez Hunter to defend his title at Morphettville come May 16th.

Smokin’ Joey has posted a commendable record of seven wins and eight minor place finishes through his 49 start career to date, Smokin’ Joey jumped from the gates only fairly in the 2014 Goodwood and appeared well and truly out of contention when rounding onto the final straight wide and off-pace, but produced a scintillating turn of foot to poke clear of a runaway Platelet in the final 50m.

Revealing the son of Encosta De Lago has suffered from a cold since a flat performance for fourth in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) on March 14th, Hunter told AAP he has cut back the seven-year-old’s work in recent weeks, who will not appear competitively on course again until the 2015 Goodwood.

“He had a cold. I thought he was below average that day (Blamey Stakes) and then post that he was a bit crook so we backed off and we’ve got plenty of time,” Hunter said.

“He’ll go to The Goodwood and will have a barrier trial before that.

“He’ll be coming back to 1200 metres and hopefully he can do it again.”

Unable to make much of a competitive impact over the 2014 Spring Carnival before a trip to Perth delivered credible fourth place finishes in each of the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m), Smokin’ Joey was unlucky to be checked during the running of the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) first-up this time but recovered well enough to finish fourth.

Returning to the winner’s circle for the first time since his Goodwood triumph in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) on February 14th, the gelding out of Dalzing produced a keen final straight sprint in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) on February 28th and was unlucky to place an agonizingly-close second to Suavito. is currently offering the best odds on all major races through the autumn and winter carnivals!
