Lord Of The Sky to Target The Goodwood 2015

April 28th, 2015

Initially underlining the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) in Brisbane as his next major target, trainer Robbie Laing has elected to change courses for talented sprinter Lord Of The Sky, who will now be set for the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) in Adelaide on May 16th.

Lord Of The Sky took a couple of runs to find scintillating condition this time in but more than stamped his claims as a serious top-level racehorse when finishing an agonizingly-close second to Chautauqua in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on April 6th; beating home the likes of Lankan Rupee and Terravista.

Citing the likely-to-be talent rich field heading towards the Stradbroke Handicap, Laing said he is confident the 2015 The Goodwood offers the best chance of a maiden victory at the highest level; something vital in increasing his stud value.

“We had a few studs saying they were inches off picking up the phone and making good offers, so what he needs is to win a Group One,” Laing told AAP.

“Every man and his dog is going for the Stradbroke and I’d hate to go up there and diminish the value that he’s now got.

“He doesn’t do well in the paddock.

“We’ve kept him at home and have been poking around down at the beach and in the last few days he’s really done a treat.”

Posting five wins and a further four minor places through his 17 career starts so far, Lord Of The Sky arguably announced his racing arrival over a 2014 winter campaign highlighted by an impressive win in the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m).

Returning in summer for fourth in the Listed Xmas Cup (1000m), Lord Of The Sky was unlucky to finish second in each of the Listed Christmas Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m), and while appearing to have fallen out of form when eleventh in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m), the stallion out of Princess Abassi responded well in finishing a credible fourth in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) in his only other start prior to the TJ Smith.
