Laing Pleased Lord Of The Sky Ahead of 2015 Goodwood Handicap

May 13th, 2015

Robbie Laing has been thrilled with the condition of Lord Of The Sky this time in and is confident he has what it takes to break through for a maiden win at the highest level in Saturday’s Group 1 Goodwood Handicap (1200m) at Morphettville.

Lord Of The Sky has posted five wins and a further four minors through his 17 career starts so far and has received an ideal lead-in to the 2015 Goodwood Handicap; overcoming a disappointing run for 11th in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) with a credible fourth in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) before placing an agonizingly-close second to Chautauqua in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) on Day 1 of The Championships.

Understandably pleased with the results posted by the Danerich entire so far, Laing told Racenet the four-year-old is a pleasure to train and is confident the conditions of the Goodwood should suit Lord Of The Sky, even from barrier 15.

“He flew in a trial here the Monday before the Oakleigh Plate then disappointed on the day, so I didn’t want him doing that again,” Laing said.

“This fella does whatever you ask him then goes home and lies down, he’s a freak.

“I’m not sure speed horses are necessarily suited in the Goodwood but I can’t change the way he races.

“He’ll likely be up in the first two or three and hopefully he can get into some good going in the straight.

“It’s a funny track Morphettville, they race there nearly every Saturday and you’d think with a horse that can lead the inside section of the track would be good but the last few years they’ve been getting out off the fence in the straight so hopefully he can get out into some good going where it counts.”

Lord Of The Sky more than stamped his claims as a serious racehorse over a standout 2014 winter preparation, highlighted by a near-five length victory in the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m).
