2016 The Goodwood Second-up for Admiral

May 3rd, 2016

Trainer Barry Campbell has confirmed stable star Admiral will take his place at Flemington on Saturday as a final point of call ahead of an appearance in the 2016 The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville on May 21st.

Admiral has undoubtedly been the star of Tasmanian racing through recent seasons and has amassed an impressive record of fourteen wins and three minors through his nineteen career starts, since first appearing on course competitively in late 2013.

Entered for a 1000m handicap race on Saturday, Campbell told AAP he does not think the race will suit the Mossman gelding, but believes it will figure as an ideal tuning point ahead of the 2016 The Goodwood.

“The 1000 metres will probably be too short for him but it’s perfect for Adelaide,” Campbell said.

Campbell revealed the four-year-old may remain on the mainland leading into his tilt at The Goodwood, and will be set for the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in June should he perform well in the Morphettville sprint.

“He’s booked to come home but he may not,” Campbell said.

“He does a fair bit of beach work and has a yard here at home.

“He likes that. He’s a bit of a country boy.”

“If he goes well on Saturday he goes to Adelaide, and if he goes well in Adelaide he’ll go to Brisbane.

“He’s only a four-year-old and hasn’t had 20 starts. If we turn him out, who’s to say his five-year-old season won’t be his best.

“We’re not going to flog him around for the fun of it.”

Admiral stamped himself as a colt to follow via a number of impressive performances as a three-year-old; most notably beating The Cleaner to the line in the Listed George Adams Plate (1600m) in Tasmania before crossing to the mainland for an impressive fifth in the talent-rich Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) in 2015.

Undefeated in his five most recent starts, Admiral has claimed eight wins at black type level for more than $600,000 in prize money.

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best 2016 The Goodwood odds, for which Admiral can be taken at a quote of $21 for success.
