Dabernig Pleased with 2016 The Goodwood Runners

May 17th, 2016

The Goodwood has not been a particularly lucky race for the Lindsay Park operation in recent years, but co-trainer Tom Dabernig is confident the team is offered its best chance of a return to the winner’s circle in 2016 after confirming five runners in the race’s field.

Faatinah, Sheidel, Churchill Dancer, Fast ‘N’ Rocking and Miss Promiscuity have all been confirmed to take their positions in the 2016 The Goodwood field, and have all found pleasing form leading into the Morphettville feature.

Miss Promiscuity was unlucky to lose rider Luke Nolen in transit during the running of the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) a fortnight ago and subsequently hindered the chances of Sheidel in the race, but both runners have reportedly come through the day well.

“Miss Promiscuity was fine. It was actually pretty harmless from her point of view. She came out of it without any issue,” Dabernig told AAP.

“And Sheidel, I think she’s improved a shade.”

Crediting Grandfather Colin as the family’s most recent winner of The Goodwood, Dabernig is hopeful of reversing the trend in the feature race this year.

“It hasn’t been a lucky race for us,” Dabernig said.

“I looked up the history, and my grandfather won it but I don’t think David has won it, or Peter.

“So it’s been a while between drinks. But we’re well represented.”

Ladbrokes.com.au currently rates Sheidel and Churchill Dancer as Lindsay Park’s best chances in 2016 The Goodwood betting markets at even $21 quotes.

A former Perth galloper, Sheidel has been a strong and consistent performer in her four competitive starts for Dabernig and co-trainer David Hayes so far.

Running third in the Jeep 55 Second Challenge Heat 16 (955m), the Holy Roman Emperor mare placed fourth in the Ladbrokes Infohub Handicap (1000m) on April 9th before beating a talented field to the line in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) on April 23rd.

Sheidel is likely to be partnered by Matthew Neilson in The Goodwood, after the hoop guided her to a close second in the Robert Sangster last start.

Churchill Dancer ran an agonizingly-close second in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) on January 23rd; progressing to fourth in the Group 1Newmarket Handicap (1200m) before placing sixth in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) last time out.
