Under The Louvre is a proven performer in The Goodwood, having capped a particularly strong Autumn Carnival campaign a credible third in last year’s edition of the race behind Flamberge and Lord Of The Sky.

Smerdon told Racing Ahead the Excellent Art gelding has taken plenty of benefit from his first-up run for third in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) on April 23rd and is offered a great opportunity to post a maiden win at the highest level in The Goodwood 2016.

“He’s a horse that ran third in the race last year, and I think it’s a good race for him on a number of fronts,” Smerdon said.

“The weight scale they operate in set weight and penalties where the penalties are imposed for Group wins seem him pretty well served because he’s 105-rater but has only won a couple of times at Listed level.

“He’s had three Group 1 placings and I think if you have a look at the field, the only horse he would have met a touch better in a handicap is Black Heart Bart, the rest he would have met worse at the handicap.

“He’s not a big horse, so to be down at 55.5kgs is a benefit to him, and he’s drawn well in a middle gate. He’s got a couple of things in his favour.”

Dwayne Dunn has been confirmed to take the ride on Under The Louvre in The Goodwood, and Smerdon is confident the veteran hoop could be the difference in success.

“Dwayne was the leading jockey in Adelaide for a long time, so he would know all of the nuances of that track better than most, so I see that as another plus,” Smerdon said.

“In a race like this, the run of the race is who gets the breaks at the right time. There’s not a lot between a lot of the horses here, but I do see Darren Weir’s horse as the top pick for mine.”

Under The Louvre has posted a commendable eight wins and twelve minors through twenty-seven career starts, since first appearing on course competitively in 2013.

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best 2016 The Goodwood odds, for which Under The Louvre can be taken at a generous quote of $7.50 for success.
